It's so important that thousands of people still ask this question online 17 years after Enagic opened its first US location. The goal of our company is to bring order to the chaos of the hydrogen industry and provide clarity to everyone by answering industry's and consumers' pressing questions objectively. The purpose of this article series is to answer the commonly asked question: “What is Kangen Water? In other words, what exactly is Kangen Water? What does it not include? The therapeutic agent in the product, as well as several of its top misconceptions. As a result of this article, people will have a better understanding of ionized water rather than bash Kangen Water. In answering these questions, we will equip the industry and consumers with the necessary information to make informed decisions about Kangen Water and give them a higher degree of discernment. First, "Kangen Water®" is the trademark name for electrolyzed water produced by Eangic's water ionizers. It is also known as "Return to Origin" in Japanese. The company wants to convey that their water ionizers produce healthier water than other types. Having said that, it does not tell us what Kangen Water really is. Water electrolyzed through water electrolysis is commonly known as Kangen Water, which is the catholyte (water from the negative terminal). It's important to keep in mind that Enagic manufactures alkaline water ionizers and water ionizers that produce electrolyzed water. The water produced by alkaline water ionizers has hydrogen content called ERW (electrolyzed reduced water) or EAW/ARW (electrolyzed alkaline water/alkaline reduced water). As a result, this water will have an alkaline pH with varying levels of dissolved hydrogen gas ranging from 0.01-1 mg/L (ppm). In other words, Kangen Water is hydrogen-rich water with an alkaline pH. But what exactly is hydrogen water? The term hydrogen water is used to describe any kind of water that contains dissolved hydrogen gas, often referred to as molecular hydrogen. A number of studies are being conducted on molecular hydrogen. This has been identified as a legitimate medical gas with potential for treating more than 170 human disease models. There is, however, a common misconception popularized throughout the internet and by water ionizer distributors that conventional water ionizers provide the best therapeutic benefits from hydrogen water. Traditional water ionizers, such as Enagic and newer generation water ionizers, were not designed to produce hydrogen-rich water for therapeutic purposes, but to make alkaline water instead. "It is important to note that alkaline water ionizers were developed before molecular hydrogen was recognized as a therapeutic agent. These units were designed for alkaline pH, not high dissolved hydrogen concentrations." Due to this fact, water ionizers (standard or new generation) are limited in their ability to produce and dissolve H2. We have a background in water ionizer research and technical leadership and have owned multiple water ionizer devices (analyzed in detail). There are some alkaline water ionizers that do not produce enough hydrogen gas dissolved in the water to meet the detection limit of 0.01ppm. Alkaline water ionizers like the Kangen SD 501 can produce adequate hydrogen gas levels, but their electrodes scale up quickly due to their alkaline water production, preventing hydrogen gas from dissolving. In spite of all that, Enagic units (K8, SD501, etc) can produce hydrogen-rich water with therapeutic levels of molecular hydrogen with the correct source water conditions, but the technology has limitations and inconsistencies regarding dissolved molecular hydrogen as previously described. We have found that these units usually test at 0.2 to 0.6 mg/L (ppm) of dissolved hydrogen, which does not meet therapeutic health benefits level. H2 concentrations from alkaline water ionizers are typically around 0.1 parts per million (ppm) to 0.7 parts per million (ppm) for normal water flow and normal source. It is possible to increase molecular hydrogen concentrations in these machines by running the water very slowly, but the resulting pH is very high, making it unpalatable. Based on our experience, testing, analysis, engineering evaluation, and research data on molecular hydrogen, we concluded that Kangen Water (Enagic units) are not optimally designed to produce therapeutic hydrogen-rich water in humans. These units are not the best choice to administer comparable levels of molecular hydrogen as used in preclinical and clinical studies. Many of the proponents of Kangen Water claim that ionized water and/or Kangen Water is therapeutic due to the many properties the water has (many of which are either unsubstantiated or completely false) . However, several scientific studies and reports have shown that these claims are false. As far as I am aware, the reason Kangen Water or ionized water may have any potential to provide health benefits is nothing to do with the pH, alkalinity, water cluster size, absorption rate, ORP readings, etc. of the water. The reason for this is that all water ionizers produce molecular hydrogen (medical gas) through electrolysis of water. Researchers found that alkaline water ionizers containing hydrogen concentration (H2) decreased nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice induced by HFD." Several studies have shown that molecular hydrogen gas can be generated through electrolyzed reduced water (ERW) or alkaline water ionizers. In ERW, molecule hydrogen (H2) plays an important role. Another study 41 found that hydrogen gas (H2) was responsible for alkaline reduced water's therapeutic benefits, rather than pH, minerals, or other properties. A recent review article43 states that studies/researchers have "explicitly proved that molecular hydrogen exerts therapeutic effects, but not alkaline in the electrolyzed alkaline water". It is important for the ionized water industry and consumers to know this information since it emphasizes the significance of having water with a decent hydrogen gas concentration. H2 concentrations (not ORP or pH) are responsible for therapeutic effects differences among machines. Finally, I hope you have gained a better understanding of Kangen Water by reading this article. However, as molecular hydrogen research develops and reveals objective truths, we must become aware of the best way to proceed as we move forward. The key to all ionized water is molecular hydrogen. The production and dissolution of molecular hydrogen must be optimized in hydrogen water systems in order to potentially receive therapeutic benefits. Therefore, in our professional opinion, if you are an individual that has purchased an Enagic Kangen Water System (K8, SD501, Junior II, etc) and you are not looking to purchase another hydrogen water device. However, if you’re in the market or looking to purchase a hydrogen water system or a device that produces functional water (ionized water/hydrogen-rich water), I would consider reviewing our IONRICH SPE-PEM Hydrogen water bottle.
